’Tis the season to be jolly because it’s the most wonderful time of the year!
We are in the middle of one of my favorite seasons right now - the holiday season. My family and I celebrate Christmas, but no matter what holiday you celebrate with yours I think we can all agree there is something magical about this time of year.
Every year around Thanksgiving, I go into my son’s bedroom, look through his books and pull all the Christmas-themed books from the shelves. Then, I carefully wrap 24 of them in Christmas wrapping paper and my son gets to choose one to open each night before bed, which we then read together. It’s a fun tradition we started when he was just a baby, and one of the things he most looks forward to. As he’s gotten older, I’ve had to replace some of his baby books with more grown-up books, so he also enjoys the treasure hunt for the new titles sprinkled throughout the month.
Another thing we love doing is baking Christmas cookies. Every year I bake with my son, I am reminded of the patience my grandmother must have had for me each year when we baked cookies side-by-side. While measurements aren’t my kid’s strong suit, you won’t find a better taste tester outside of the North Pole, ha.
And we also love checking out the Christmas lights. There’s nothing like strolling through the Rotary Gardens or Conservatory all bundled up, sipping hot cocoa and admiring the creativity of the displays. We’ve also taken to checking social media for homes in the area that encourage visitors to come check out their elaborate light displays. We particularly enjoy the ones that collect money, books, or gifts as “admission” to share with those in need.
What about you? What holiday traditions do you and yours enjoy? We’re always looking for new ideas!
