Mid-States Concrete Industries will be closed tomorrow (July 4) in honor of Independence Day.

Independence Day commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The Continental Congress declared that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and were no longer part of the British Empire.

The holiday is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States.

Independence Day is also a fantastic movie starring Will Smith, Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum, released in 1996. Independence Day focuses on disparate groups of people who converge in the Nevada desert in the aftermath of a worldwide attack by an extraterrestrial race of unknown origin. With the other people of the world, they launch a last-ditch counterattack on July 4 — Independence Day in the United States.

The film gave us one of the best movie speeches of all time, when President Thomas J. Whitmore (Pullman) addresses the U.S. fighter pilots.

"Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in this history of mankind.

"Mankind — that word should have new meaning for all of us today.

"We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore.

"We will be united in our common interests.

"Perhaps its fate that today is the 4th of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom, not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution — but from annihilation.

"We're fighting for our right to live, to exist.

"And should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice:

"We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive!

"Today, we celebrate our Independence Day!"
